Common barley Hordeum vulgare. [Substituted for Hordeum distichum, biblical two-rowed barley.] In bible times, barley was a very important cereal grain used both to feed animals and to make bread and porridge for human consumption. The bread was never cut with a knife but was broken into smaller pieces which were then used to scoop the food from the common pot. The bread was always held in the right hand when used in this manner. The term 'to break bread' means to share in a meal together. Exodus 9:31 |
