In Christian symbolism barley and wheat sheaves represent the Body of Christ in the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Jesus referred to himself as the Bread of Life (John 6:35). Bread is also used to refer to all things necessary for this life Matthew 6:11). Unleavened bread, made without yeast, is often used as a figurative reference for purity.
