Wheat Triticum aestivum (also known as T. vulgare). [Commonly grown for flour today and substituted for Triticum dicoccum, the wheat in bible times, seldom grown today.] In Christian symbolism barley and wheat sheaves represent the Body of Christ in the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Jesus referred to himself as the Bread of Life (John 6:35). Bread is also used to refer to all things necessary for this life Matthew 6:11). Unleavened bread, made without yeast, is often used as a figurative reference for purity. Genesis 41, 42 |
