Spikenard, Nard  Centranthus ruber  perennial.

This may have been the essential oil of the desert, pure nard from a plant member of the Valerian family. The roots and stems are dried for making perfume before the leaves unfold. When a host received distinguished guests, he or she anointed them with spikenard. (See slide #42)
